"After PhD" views: Fernando Jiménez Urbanos
Fernando Jiménez Urbanos defended his doctoral thesis entitled "New nanofabrication routes to tailor the electronic properties of MoS2 devices: from field effect transistors to lateral homo-structures" on Sep. 20th, 2019.
- How did you heard about the institute IMDEA Nanociencia? Tell us more about the beginning of the story…
I was in my second year of Physics degree. I remember the experimental laboratory subject, in which I met Prof. Amadeo Vázquez de Parga. I did not know about IMDEA at that moment. After enjoying a lot doing experiments in the lab, Amadeo advised me to join IMDEA Nanociencia with an internship summer grant. I started here as an intern in 2013. Two years later, after finishing my Physics degree, I joined IMDEA Nanociencia as master and later as PhD student.
- How was the working environment at IMDEA Nanociencia? What was your most positive experience at this place?
The environment is great. You can find multidisciplinary groups to work with. It is always beautiful to mix different scientific backgrounds. In general, researchers are open to discuss science and the atmosphere is very friendly.
I really like the facilities. There are a lot of laboratories with very new scientific instrumentation. In the case of my thesis, I use the cleanroom facility, which is amazing. There is a lot of new instrumentation that allows working at the highest scientific level. I also used the lab of Dr. Daniel Granados. It was great to have such equipment to develop my research.
- What is your next stage? Tell us more about your career expectations now.
First of all, I want to finish the experiments that were open at the end of my PhD.
After that, I would like to continue researching, from a more applied point of view. I hope to find this kind of opportunity here in Spain, where there are a lot of strong groups and companies.
