“Nanociencia to-go” goes online
24.11.2020
The outreach project for seniors of IMDEA Nanociencia continues as an online event. The students from the University of Experience at the URJC have participated in this edition; they have received a kit of scientific experiences to share with family and friends.
While the covid19 pandemic has reduced significantly the in-person outreach activities, at IMDEA Nanociencia the dissemination continues in a virtual way. The initiative “Nanociencia to-go” aims to bring Nanoscience and Nanotechnology to an older generation of students, and this occasion, with the students of the University of Experience at Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC).
Researchers at IMDEA Nanociencia Dr. Emilio Pérez, Dr. Juan Cabanillas and Dr. Ramón Bernardo have run this scientific workshop. Scientific experiences with day-to-day elements have been shown. The students have experienced with the scattering of light in a glass of water with micro- and nano-particles from milk, phenomenon that resembles the sunset; and the light diffraction from a CD that makes shine the rainbow colours. Also, they have carried out a “Nobel Prize experiment”, in which graphite sheets are obtained such as Nobel Prize winners Geim and Novoselov did: with a piece of sticky tape. Such graphite sheets are so thin that in certain areas they would contain the material from the future: graphene.
The students of University of Experience will receive their scientific kits and carry with them home to share what they learned with family and friends. IMDEA Nanociencia conducts outreach activities for seniors since 2016, always in collaboration with the Universities of Experience (UCM, UAM, URJC…) and other education centres for adults and the elderly. This time, and thanks to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), incorporates the scientific kits “to-go”.
