In the last years, electrodeposition has emerged as a very interesting technique for the fabrication of nanomaterials and nanostructures, with potential applications in many scientific and technological areas, from spintronics to biomedical technology. In the talk I will review how template-assisted electrodeposition can be used to fabricate nanowires and show that the properties of these nanowires can be studied individually. The talk will focus on two examples: the study of quantum size effects in single-crystalline bismuth nanowires and the fabrication of multifunctional core-shell nanowires that can be used as recoverable pH-nanosensors.
