Madrid, 2nd December 2024. Emilio M Pérez, researcher and Executive Director of Strategy at IMDEA Nanociencia, has received the Research Excellence Award awarded annually by the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry.

Emilio M. Pérez has a degree in Chemistry from the University of Salamanca, where he also completed his Bachelor's Degree under the direction of Prof. Joaquín Rodríguez-Morán. He began his research career in Prof. David Leigh's group at the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained his PhD distinction. He would later join Prof. Nazario Martín's group at the Complutense University of Madrid as Juan de la Cierva. In 2008 he joined IMDEA Nanociencia as a Ramón y Cajal researcher, and since 2015 he has also been part of the Executive Management Committee. Dr. Pérez has received several awards, including the 2006 IUPAC Award for Young Chemists, the 2009 RSEQ-Sigma-Aldrich Award for Early Childhood Researchers and the 2013 Miguel Catalán Award for Scientists under 40 years of age. His current research focuses on the chemistry of low-dimensional materials, in particular the chemical modification of mechanically entangled carbon nanotubes, the chemical modification of 2D materials, and the study of the principles of supramolecular chemistry.

The other winners in the same category are Dr. Susana Campuzano Ruiz (Complutense University of Madrid), Dr. Jesús Alberto Escarpa Miguel (University of Alcalá) and Dr. Guillermo Mínguez Espallarga (University of Valencia). The award values the candidates' scientific career of excellence and scientific leadership over the last 5 years.

The awards ceremony was held on November 29 at an event in the Auditorium of the University of Extremadura (Badajoz), inaugurated by Prof. Nazario Martín, professor at the Faculty of Chemical Sciences UCM and deputy director of IMDEA Nanociencia, with a few words of "recognition to the partners with 45 years of service to the RSEQ". In his award speech, Emilio acknowledged the contribution of his research group, naming all the present and past members who have been part of it, in addition to thanking the support of his professors, collaborators, and the IMDEA Nanoscience institution.  "The award is a recognition of the trajectory of our group. For me it means that we are doing things well and it is of course a stimulus to continue improving. I am especially excited that it is a recognition from the largest Spanish scientific society, the RSEQ, and that it has been delivered in Badajoz, where part of my family lives," says Emilio.

The RSEQ Award for Research Excellence 2024 to Emilio Pérez is granted in collaboration with BASF.
