Madrid, 24th September, 2025. Natalia Martín, postdoctoral researcher at IMDEA Nanociencia, has received the ‘Emerging Researcher in Chemistry’ award from the Madrid Regional Branch of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ). This first edition of the awards aims to recognise the scientific careers of early-stage researchers who stand out for their quality, innovation and leadership in the field of chemistry.
Natalia Martín is an expert in near-field optical spectroscopy. Natalia Martín's research, conducted in collaboration with the ‘Chemistry of Low-Dimensional Materials’ Research Group led by Prof. Emilio M. Pérez and the ‘Manipulation of Molecular Motors’ led by Prof. Borja Ibarra, focuses on the construction and development of experimental techniques combining light tunnelling microscopes, achieving nanometric spatial resolutions and their application in nanoscale physicochemical processes. At IMDEA Nanoscience, Natalia is developing a hybrid device combining optical tweezers-based force spectroscopy (SMFS) with tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). This instrument allows the mechanical manipulation of individual molecules in the piconewton force range and simultaneous characterisation by vibrational spectroscopy.
The awards ceremony, held at the Complutense University of Madrid, closed with a talk by Prof. Nazario Martín, Chair of the Organic Chemistry Department at UCM and Deputy Director of IMDEA Nanociencia, entitled ‘Benzene: six carbon atoms that changed the world’ in commemoration of the bicentenary of the isolation of the benzene molecule. During the event, dedicated to recognising young scientific talent, five young researchers from the Community of Madrid were recognised with the ‘Emerging Researcher’ award, and the best doctoral theses in Chemistry were recognised with the ‘María Cruz Moreno-Bondi’ award.
