Madrid, 18 de septiembre, 2024. Allan Johnson, ‘Ramón y Cajal’ researcher at IMDEA Nanociencia, was awarded with a ‘Leonardo’ grant from the BBVA Foundation. His project “Imaging and Controlling Ultrafast Quantum Devices” will help to understand how next generation electronic devices like "memristors" based on quantum materials operate at the nanometer and femtosecond timescale. By using ultrafast coherent X-ray imaging methods pioneered in the ‘Ultrafast Science of Quantum Materials’ group at IMDEA Nanociencia, Dr. Johnson will take videos of the stochastic quantum effects that underpin these new devices, helping understand how these enigmatic materials can be optimized for exotic neuromorphic (human brain-like) computing applications.
The Leonardo Grants aim to boost knowledge -understood as a continuum of research and creation through exploration, without erecting walls between disciplines. In 2024, 57 from the 1.423 projects presented have been awarded with a Leonardo Grant. Allan Johnson was awarded one of only 2 grants given in the Physics category.
